Gregory Cross was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Cross showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Cross began his formal music education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly progressed and began performing in public at the age of eight. At the age of ten, he started studying the violin, and by the age of twelve, he had already won several local competitions. In 1998, Cross was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he studied with renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman. During his time at Juilliard, Cross continued to win competitions and perform in public. In 2003, he graduated from the Pre-College Division with honors. After graduating from Juilliard, Cross attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with violinist Aaron Rosand. While at Curtis, Cross continued to win competitions and perform in public. In 2007, he graduated from Curtis with a Bachelor of Music degree. Following his graduation from Curtis, Cross began his professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented young violinists of his generation. In 2008, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto under the baton of Lorin Maazel. Since then, Cross has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonie. In addition to his solo career, Cross is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet, the Guarneri Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet. He is also a founding member of the Cross Quartet, which has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Cross has received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 2009, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career. In 2011, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given to an American singer or instrumentalist who shows great promise for a major international career. Cross is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is currently a professor of violin at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In conclusion, Gregory Cross is one of the most talented and accomplished classical musicians of his generation. His natural talent, combined with his rigorous training and dedication to his craft, has made him a sought-after soloist and chamber musician.
