Born on August 22, 1972, in Riga, Latvia, Kuzma showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Emils Darzins Music School in Riga, where he received a solid foundation in classical music. Kuzma's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his skill. In 1986, he won first prize in the Latvian Young Pianists Competition, and in 1988, he was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Young Pianists Competition in Vilnius, Lithuania. These early successes set the stage for Kuzma's future career in music. After completing his studies at the Emils Darzins Music School, Kuzma went on to study at the Latvian Academy of Music, where he focused on conducting. He also continued to hone his skills as a pianist, and in 1994, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. Kuzma's career as a conductor began to take off in the late 1990s, when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor, and his performances were praised for their energy and passion. In 2001, Kuzma was appointed as the principal conductor of the Latvian National Opera, a position he held until 2007. During his tenure, he led the company in numerous productions, including Verdi's "La Traviata," Puccini's "Madama Butterfly," and Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." His performances were widely acclaimed, and he was praised for his ability to bring out the best in the singers and musicians under his direction. Kuzma's success as a conductor led to numerous guest conducting engagements with orchestras around the world. In 2003, he was awarded the Latvian Grand Music Award, the highest honor in Latvian music. He has also been awarded the Order of the Three Stars, one of the highest honors in Latvia, for his contributions to the arts.
