He was born as Joseph Zmigrod, but later changed his name to Allan Gray. His parents were Polish immigrants who had settled in England. Gray showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Gray began his career as a composer in the 1920s, writing music for films and stage productions. He worked for several British film studios, including Gaumont-British and Gainsborough Pictures. He also composed music for the theatre, including the West End production of "The Beggar's Opera" in 1928. One of Gray's most famous works is the score for the 1935 film "The 39 Steps," directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film's score is considered to be one of the best in film history and helped to establish Gray as a leading composer in the British film industry. Gray's other notable film scores include "The Thief of Bagdad" (1940), "The Next of Kin" (1942), and "The Magic Box" (1951). In addition to his work in film and theatre, Gray also composed classical music. He wrote several orchestral works, including a symphony and a piano concerto. His music was influenced by the works of composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.
