The Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The orchestra was founded in 1946 by a group of local musicians who wanted to bring classical music to the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. The founding members of the orchestra included conductor Charles L. Kopp, violinist John O. Varnum, and pianist Elizabeth Cowling. The orchestra's first performance was held on November 17, 1946, at Reynolds Auditorium in Winston-Salem. Over the years, the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra has grown in size and reputation. Today, the orchestra is made up of over 80 professional musicians, many of whom have performed with major orchestras around the world. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the 1987 Presidential Inauguration of Ronald Reagan. The orchestra was selected to perform at the Inaugural Gala, which was attended by the President and First Lady. In addition to its performances in the United States, the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra has also toured internationally. In 1992, the orchestra traveled to China, where it performed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The orchestra has also been recognized for its excellence in performance. In 2003, the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The award recognized the orchestra's commitment to performing contemporary classical music. The orchestra has also been recognized for its educational programs. The Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra's Youth Orchestras program provides young musicians with the opportunity to perform in a professional setting and receive instruction from experienced musicians. The orchestra's current music director is Timothy Redmond, who has been with the orchestra since 2010. Redmond has conducted orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In recent years, the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra has continued to expand its repertoire and reach. The orchestra has collaborated with a variety of artists, including jazz musician Branford Marsalis and singer-songwriter Ben Folds. The orchestra has also continued to perform in a variety of venues, from traditional concert halls to outdoor amphitheaters. In 2019, the orchestra performed a free concert at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, which was attended by over 5,000 people.
