La Stravaganza Köln is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1986 in Cologne, Germany. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque music, particularly the works of Antonio Vivaldi. The founding members of La Stravaganza Köln were violinist and artistic director Andrew Manze, harpsichordist and organist Richard Egarr, and cellist Jaap ter Linden. The ensemble's name is derived from the Italian word "stravaganza," which means "extravagance" or "eccentricity," reflecting the ensemble's commitment to exploring the more unusual and lesser-known works of the Baroque era. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include a rotating cast of musicians, but its core members have remained committed to the ensemble's original mission. In addition to Manze, Egarr, and ter Linden, other notable members of the ensemble have included violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch, cellist Christophe Coin, and violist Hille Perl. La Stravaganza Köln has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the BBC Proms, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble has also recorded extensively, with over 50 albums to its name. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its 1993 recording of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," which was praised for its lively and energetic interpretation of the work. The ensemble has also received critical acclaim for its recordings of lesser-known works by Vivaldi, as well as works by other Baroque composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. In addition to its recordings, La Stravaganza Köln has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances. The ensemble was awarded the Diapason d'Or in 1995 for its recording of Vivaldi's "La Stravaganza," and was named "Ensemble of the Year" by the German music magazine Fono Forum in 2000. Despite its success, La Stravaganza Köln remains committed to its original mission of exploring the more unusual and lesser-known works of the Baroque era. The ensemble continues to perform and record, and its members remain dedicated to bringing the music of the Baroque era to audiences around the world.
