Land's End Chamber Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1999 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming, which combines classical music with other genres such as jazz, folk, and world music. The ensemble's main members are Beth Root Sandvoss (cello), John Lowry (violin), and Susanne Ruberg-Gordon (piano). Beth Root Sandvoss is a cellist who has performed with many orchestras and ensembles in Canada and the United States. She has also been a member of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra since 1990. John Lowry is a violinist who has performed with many orchestras and ensembles in Canada and the United States. He has also been a member of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra since 1987. Susanne Ruberg-Gordon is a pianist who has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Canada, the United States, and Europe. She has also been a faculty member at Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary since 1990. The ensemble's name, Land's End, was inspired by the rugged coastline of Cornwall, England, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the English Channel. The name reflects the ensemble's commitment to exploring the boundaries of classical music and pushing the limits of what is possible in chamber music. Since its founding, Land's End Chamber Ensemble has performed extensively throughout Canada and the United States. The ensemble has also been featured on many radio and television programs, including CBC Radio's "West Coast Performance" and "The Sunday Edition," as well as NPR's "Performance Today." One of the ensemble's most notable performances was at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The ensemble performed at the Canadian Olympic House, where they played a program of Canadian and American music. The performance was broadcast live on CBC Television and was seen by millions of viewers around the world. In addition to their performances, Land's End Chamber Ensemble has also received many awards and accolades. In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the Western Canadian Music Award for "Outstanding Classical Recording" for their album "Land's End Chamber Ensemble: Canadian Premieres." The album features works by Canadian composers such as R. Murray Schafer, Malcolm Forsyth, and John Estacio. The ensemble has also been recognized for their commitment to education and outreach. They have conducted workshops and masterclasses for students of all ages, and have worked with organizations such as the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra's "Musicians in the Making" program and the Mount Royal University Conservatory's "Music Bridge" program.
