Vincent Ho is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music. He was born on May 11, 1975, in Ottawa, Canada. Ho grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a violinist. He began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and trumpet. Ho attended the University of Calgary, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to study at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition. Ho also studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he earned a Diploma in Composition. Ho's music is known for its blend of Western classical music with Asian influences. He has been influenced by the music of his Chinese heritage, as well as by the music of other cultures. Ho's music often explores themes of identity, culture, and social justice. Ho has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a composer. In 2009, he was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts' Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for outstanding achievement in the field of music. In 2011, he was named the Emerging Artist of the Year by the Toronto Arts Foundation. In 2016, he was awarded the Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award by SOCAN. Ho's compositions have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. Some of his most notable works include "The Shaman," a concerto for percussion and orchestra, "The Tides of Time," a symphony for orchestra, and "The Journey," a work for choir and orchestra. "The Shaman" was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2011. The work features a solo percussionist who acts as a shaman, leading the orchestra on a journey through different musical landscapes. The piece incorporates elements of Chinese folk music, as well as rhythms and sounds from other cultures. "The Tides of Time" was commissioned by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered in 2014. The work is a symphony in four movements that explores the theme of time. The piece incorporates elements of Chinese music, as well as Western classical music. "The Journey" was commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2017. The work is a setting of a poem by Chinese poet Li Bai, which tells the story of a journey through the mountains. The piece incorporates elements of Chinese music, as well as Western classical music. Ho's music has been praised for its originality and its ability to blend different musical traditions. His work has been described as "vibrant," "evocative," and "powerful." Ho continues to be an important figure in the world of contemporary classical music, and his music is sure to be heard for many years to come.
