She also won the top prize at the 2000 Irving M. Klein International String Competition and was a finalist in the 2002 Naumburg International Violin Competition. Liu's talent as a composer was also evident from an early age. She began writing music as a teenager and went on to study composition at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music. Her compositions have been performed by a variety of ensembles, including the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Silk Road Ensemble.
