He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged their children to pursue music. Blane began playing the piano at a young age and showed a talent for music. He attended the University of Southern California, where he studied music composition and theory. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In the 1930s, Blane began working as a songwriter for Hollywood films. He wrote songs for several popular films, including "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), which starred Judy Garland. The film's soundtrack included several of Blane's most famous songs, including "The Trolley Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Blane continued to work as a songwriter throughout the 1940s and 1950s, writing songs for films such as "Neptune's Daughter" (1949) and "Three Little Words" (1950). He also wrote songs for Broadway musicals, including "Best Foot Forward" (1941) and "Jamaica" (1957). In addition to his work as a songwriter, Blane also composed classical music. He wrote several orchestral works, including "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" (1951) and "Symphony No. 1" (1956). His classical music was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Blane's most famous work, however, remains his contributions to the American songbook. His songs have been covered by countless artists over the years, and they continue to be popular today.
