Peter Ligeti was born on May 12, 1985, in Budapest, Hungary. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Ligeti was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Ligeti's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He won his first competition at the age of eight and went on to win numerous awards throughout his childhood and teenage years. At the age of 16, he was accepted into the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, György Kurtág. During his time at the academy, Ligeti continued to win awards and accolades, including first prize at the International Piano Competition in Rome in 2004. He also began performing in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2007, Ligeti graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music with honors and was awarded a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York. While at Juilliard, he studied under the guidance of Yoheved Kaplinsky and Robert McDonald and continued to perform in major concert halls around the world. Ligeti's career continued to flourish, and he became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring new life to classical works. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, and his performances of Liszt's Sonata in B minor became legendary. In 2012, Ligeti was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. The grant provided him with financial support and helped to further his career. Ligeti continued to perform and record throughout his career, releasing several critically acclaimed albums, including his recording of Liszt's Sonata in B minor, which was hailed as a definitive interpretation of the work. Tragically, Ligeti's career was cut short when he passed away in a car accident in 2016 at the age of 31. His death was a great loss to the classical music world, and he was mourned by fans and colleagues around the world. Despite his short career, Peter Ligeti left a lasting impact on the classical music world.
