NetherlandsBirth:December 5, 1895 in Amsterdam, The NetherlandsDeath:July 2, 1952Period:ModernGenre:ConcertoHenriëtta Bosmans was a Dutch composer and pianist who lived from 6 December 1895 to 2 July 1952. She was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to a family of musicians. Her father, Henri Bosmans, was a cellist and her mother, Sara Benedicts, was a pianist. Henriëtta showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. She received her first piano lessons from her mother and later studied with the Dutch pianist and composer Cornelis Dopper. Henriëtta Bosmans made her debut as a pianist at the age of 14, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. She continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician throughout her career, often playing her own compositions. In addition to the piano, she also played the viola and the harp. As a composer, Henriëtta Bosmans was largely self-taught. She began composing at a young age and was encouraged by her father, who recognized her talent. Her early works were influenced by the Romantic tradition, but she later developed a more modern style. She was particularly interested in the music of Debussy and Ravel, and her own compositions often show their influence. Henriëtta Bosmans composed in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, songs, and solo piano pieces. Her most famous work is probably her Concertino for Piano and Orchestra, which she composed in 1928. The piece is a lively and virtuosic work that showcases both the piano and the orchestra. It has become a staple of the Dutch concert repertoire and is still frequently performed today. Another notable work by Henriëtta Bosmans is her String Quartet, which she composed in 1926. The piece is a complex and challenging work that shows her mastery of the string quartet form. It is considered one of the finest Dutch string quartets of the 20th century. Henriëtta Bosmans also composed a number of songs, many of which were written for her own voice. Her songs are characterized by their lyrical melodies and sensitive settings of the text. One of her most famous songs is "Nachtelijk Paardrijden" (Nighttime Horseback Riding), which sets a poem by the Dutch poet J.C. Bloem. In addition to her work as a composer and performer, Henriëtta Bosmans was also active as a teacher and music critic. She taught piano and composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory and wrote reviews for various Dutch newspapers and magazines. She was a strong advocate for contemporary music and often championed the work of young composers. Henriëtta Bosmans died in Amsterdam in 1952 at the age of 56. She left behind a legacy of music that continues to be admired and performed today. Her work as a composer and performer helped to establish a Dutch tradition of classical music that is still thriving today.More....
