His father was a postman, and his mother was a housewife. James showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the bass and the guitar. In 1946, James joined the German Navy, where he played in the navy band. After leaving the navy in 1948, he joined the Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra as a bassist.
