James Last was a German composer and bandleader who was born on April 17, 1929, in Bremen, Germany. He was the youngest of three sons born to Louis and Martha Last. His father was a postman, and his mother was a housewife. James showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the bass and the guitar. In 1946, James joined the German Navy, where he played in the navy band. After leaving the navy in 1948, he joined the Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra as a bassist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the orchestra's leader in 1950. In 1955, he formed his own band, the James Last Orchestra, which became one of the most successful orchestras in Germany. James Last's music was a blend of classical, pop, and jazz, and he was known for his unique arrangements of popular songs. He was also a prolific composer, and he wrote over 2000 pieces of music during his career. Some of his most famous compositions include "Games That Lovers Play," "The Lonely Shepherd," and "Biscaya." In the 1960s, James Last's music became popular in the UK and the US, and he began touring internationally. He performed in over 100 countries and sold over 100 million records worldwide. He was also a regular performer on television, and he appeared on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
