He was the son of a butcher and grew up in a musical family. His father played the accordion, and his mother sang in a choir. Kaempfert began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. In his teenage years, Kaempfert played in various dance bands in Hamburg. He also studied music theory and composition at the Hamburg Conservatory. In 1943, he was drafted into the German army and served as a bandsman. After the war, he returned to Hamburg and began working as a freelance arranger and composer. In the 1950s, Kaempfert became a successful arranger for various German artists, including Freddy Quinn and Ivo Robic. He also worked as a producer for Polydor Records. In 1959, he had his first international hit with the instrumental tune "Wonderland by Night." The song reached number one on the US Billboard charts and sold over one million copies. Kaempfert continued to have success in the 1960s with hits such as "Afrikaan Beat," "A Swingin' Safari," and "Red Roses for a Blue Lady." He also wrote and arranged music for films, including the theme for the James Bond movie "You Only Live Twice." In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Kaempfert was also a bandleader. He formed the Bert Kaempfert Orchestra in the 1960s, which featured a unique sound that blended big band jazz with pop and easy listening music. The orchestra toured extensively and recorded numerous albums. Kaempfert's music was known for its catchy melodies, lush arrangements, and use of brass and woodwind instruments. His compositions were often used in films and television shows, and his influence can be heard in the music of artists such as Herb Alpert and Burt Bacharach.
