The Adaskin String Trio is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1984. The trio is named after Murray Adaskin, a Canadian composer and violinist who was a founding member of the CBC Vancouver Orchestra. The ensemble consists of three members: violinist Gwen Thompson, violist Steve Larson, and cellist Matt Haimovitz. Gwen Thompson is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles throughout North America. Steve Larson is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Radio Orchestra. Matt Haimovitz is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. The Adaskin String Trio has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe, and has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances. In 1992, the trio was awarded the prestigious Juno Award for Best Classical Album for their recording of the music of Murray Adaskin. The trio has also been nominated for several other Juno Awards, including Best Classical Album in 1994 and 1996. One of the highlights of the Adaskin String Trio's career was their performance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The trio performed at the Olympic Village and at several other venues throughout the city, and their performances were widely praised by both audiences and critics. The Adaskin String Trio has also collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles throughout their career. They have performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, among others. They have also collaborated with jazz musicians such as John McLaughlin and Fred Hersch. In addition to their performances, the Adaskin String Trio is also committed to music education. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for students of all ages, and have worked with many young musicians to help them develop their skills and talents.
