Born on October 27, 1939, in Berlin, Germany, Blau grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Blau started playing the flute at the age of ten and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Blau's musical education began at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where he studied under the guidance of Paul Meisen. He later continued his studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he studied with Aurele Nicolet. Blau's talent and dedication to music were evident from the start, and he quickly gained recognition as a promising young musician. In 1960, Blau joined the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as the principal flutist, a position he held for over thirty years. During his tenure with the orchestra, Blau became known for his exceptional musicianship and his ability to bring out the best in his fellow musicians. He was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing with some of the world's most renowned orchestras and ensembles.
