The Würzburger Philharmoniker is a classical music ensemble based in Würzburg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, by a group of musicians who were determined to bring music back to the city after the devastation of the war. The ensemble's first conductor was Georg Ebert, who led the orchestra until 1950. He was succeeded by Hermann Hildebrandt, who served as the orchestra's conductor until 1968. During this time, the Würzburger Philharmoniker established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Germany, performing regularly in Würzburg and throughout the country. In 1968, the orchestra appointed its third conductor, Günther Wich. Under his leadership, the Würzburger Philharmoniker continued to grow and expand its repertoire, performing works by both classical and contemporary composers. Wich remained with the orchestra until 1985, when he was succeeded by Jörg-Peter Weigle. Weigle led the Würzburger Philharmoniker for 15 years, during which time the orchestra achieved international recognition for its performances and recordings. In 1999, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, conducted by Weigle. In 2000, Weigle was succeeded by his former assistant conductor, Enrico Calesso. Under Calesso's leadership, the Würzburger Philharmoniker has continued to thrive, performing regularly in Würzburg and throughout Germany. The orchestra has also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Japan, China, and the United States. The Würzburger Philharmoniker is made up of approximately 80 musicians, many of whom are from the local area. The ensemble's principal conductor is Enrico Calesso, and its concertmaster is Andreas Krecher. The orchestra's repertoire includes works by a wide range of composers, from Bach and Mozart to contemporary composers such as John Adams and Arvo Pärt. The ensemble also performs regularly with guest soloists, including pianist Lang Lang and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Würzburger Philharmoniker's recent performances was its 2019 concert at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. The orchestra performed works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Strauss to critical acclaim. In addition to its performances, the Würzburger Philharmoniker is also committed to music education and outreach. The orchestra offers a range of educational programs for children and young people, including concerts and workshops in schools and community centers. Overall, the Würzburger Philharmoniker is a world-class ensemble with a rich history and a commitment to excellence in performance and education. Its musicians and conductors have worked tirelessly to bring the joy of classical music to audiences in Germany and around the world, and the orchestra's future looks bright as it continues to inspire and delight audiences with its performances.
