The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Symphony Orchestra (MITSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1949, the orchestra has a long and rich history of musical excellence and innovation. The founding of MITSO can be traced back to a group of MIT students who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create an opportunity for themselves and their peers to perform together. In the early years, the orchestra was led by student conductors and performed in various venues on and off campus. Over time, MITSO grew in size and reputation, attracting talented musicians from both MIT and the greater Boston area. Today, the orchestra is composed of approximately 100 members, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and community members. MITSO is known for its diverse repertoire, which includes both classical masterpieces and contemporary works. The orchestra has premiered numerous new compositions, including works by MIT faculty members and student composers. One of the highlights of MITSO's history was its performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 1999. The orchestra was invited to participate in the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage series, which showcases outstanding performing arts groups from around the world. MITSO's performance was well-received by both the audience and critics, and helped to raise the orchestra's profile on the national stage. In addition to its performances in the United States, MITSO has also toured internationally. In 2015, the orchestra traveled to China, where it performed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. The tour was a great success, with sold-out concerts and enthusiastic audiences. MITSO has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to contemporary music. MITSO has also been recognized for its commitment to community engagement, with awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The orchestra is led by Adam Boyles, who has been the music director and conductor since 2014. Boyles is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and has conducted orchestras around the world. Under his leadership, MITSO has continued to push the boundaries of classical music and explore new and innovative ways to engage audiences. In addition to its regular concert season, MITSO also collaborates with other organizations on special projects. For example, in 2018, the orchestra partnered with the MIT Media Lab to create a multimedia performance that combined live music with cutting-edge technology. The performance, titled "Symphony of the Future," was a unique and immersive experience that showcased the intersection of music and technology. Overall, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Symphony Orchestra is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. With its commitment to excellence, diversity, and community engagement, MITSO is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for many years to come.
