He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He also studied composition with renowned Austrian composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen. He won several competitions, including the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 1968. This win marked the beginning of his career as a professional pianist. Zank's career took off in the 1970s, and he quickly became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to interpret complex works of classical music. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, playing with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic.
