Born in Helsinki, Finland in 1966, Korhonen began playing the guitar at the age of 10. He was initially self-taught, but later studied with Jukka Savijoki at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Korhonen's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a rising star in the classical guitar world. In 1987, he won first prize in the Nordic Guitar Competition, which marked the beginning of his international career. He went on to win several other prestigious competitions, including the International Guitar Competition in Gargnano, Italy in 1990, and the Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 1992. Korhonen's success in these competitions led to numerous performance opportunities around the world. He has performed in major concert halls in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. He has also appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Korhonen's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the Renaissance to the present day. He has recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete guitar works of Heitor Villa-Lobos. He has also collaborated with many other musicians, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Arditti Quartet. In addition to his performing career, Korhonen is also a respected teacher. He has taught at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. He has also given masterclasses around the world, and has served as a jury member for several international guitar competitions. Korhonen's contributions to the classical guitar world have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1993, he was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music, and in 2003 he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, one of Finland's highest honors for cultural achievement. He has also been awarded the Guitar Foundation of America's Lifetime Achievement Award, and has been made an honorary member of the Finnish Guitar Society.
