William P. Rowlands was a Welsh composer born on March 26, 1860, in Denbigh, Wales. He was the son of a music teacher, and his father's influence played a significant role in his musical development. Rowlands began his musical education at an early age, and by the age of 12, he was already playing the organ at his local church. Rowlands continued his musical studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned composers such as Sir Arthur Sullivan and Sir Hubert Parry. During his time at the academy, Rowlands developed a deep appreciation for classical music, and he began to compose his own works. After completing his studies, Rowlands returned to Wales, where he became the organist and choirmaster at St. Asaph Cathedral. He held this position for over 50 years, during which time he composed many of his most famous works. One of Rowlands' most well-known compositions is his hymn tune "Hyfrydol," which is still widely used in churches today. The tune was originally written for the Welsh hymn "Eternal Source of Light Divine," but it has since been used for many other hymns, including "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" and "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus." In addition to his hymn tunes, Rowlands also composed many other works, including anthems, cantatas, and organ pieces. One of his most famous anthems is "Let All the World in Every Corner Sing," which is a joyful and uplifting piece that has become a staple in many church choirs' repertoires. Rowlands' music is characterized by its simplicity and beauty. He had a gift for creating melodies that were both memorable and easy to sing, which made his music accessible to a wide range of audiences. His compositions were also deeply rooted in his Welsh heritage, and many of his works incorporate traditional Welsh folk melodies and themes. Despite his success as a composer, Rowlands remained humble and dedicated to his work as an organist and choirmaster. He was known for his kindness and generosity, and he was beloved by his congregation and fellow musicians alike. Rowlands passed away on January 6, 1937, at the age of 76. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to inspire and uplift people around the world. His hymn tunes and anthems are still widely sung in churches today, and his contributions to the world of classical music have earned him a place among the great composers of his time.
