He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Essbach showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Essbach's talent was recognized early on, and he was accepted into the Berlin Conservatory at the age of 14. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including Walter Gieseking and Edwin Fischer. Essbach's dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated with top honors from the conservatory. After completing his studies, Essbach began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera. One of Essbach's most notable performances was his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1955. He performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, which was met with critical acclaim. The performance was a turning point in Essbach's career, and he became a regular performer at the Salzburg Festival for many years. Essbach's talent was not limited to the piano. He was also an accomplished composer and conductor. In 1960, he composed his first symphony, which was premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic. The symphony was well-received, and Essbach went on to compose several more works, including operas, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. In addition to his performances and compositions, Essbach was also a respected music educator. He taught at several music schools throughout Europe, including the Berlin Conservatory and the Vienna Academy of Music. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music.
