His father, Jussi Hannikainen, was a renowned composer and conductor, while his mother, Marja Hannikainen, was a pianist and music teacher. Hannikainen began playing the piano at the age of five and showed exceptional talent from an early age. He received his first piano lessons from his mother and later studied under the tutelage of several renowned pianists, including Liisa Pohjola and Ralf Gothóni. In 1997, Hannikainen was accepted into the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied piano performance and composition. During his time at the academy, he won several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Maj Lind Piano Competition in 2001.
