Born in Beirut, Lebanon, on May 5, 1965, Haig was raised in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Haig was exposed to classical music and developed a passion for it. Haig began his musical training at the age of six, studying the piano with his mother. He showed exceptional talent and was soon enrolled in the Lebanese National Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano, music theory, and composition. Haig's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded several prizes and scholarships for his outstanding performances. In 1983, Haig moved to the United States to pursue his musical education further. He enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Adele Marcus. Haig's time at Juilliard was transformative, and he emerged as a mature and accomplished pianist. Haig's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the late 1980s. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1988, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the New York Youth Symphony. Over the next few years, Haig performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, collaborating with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors.
