Ensemble Syntagma is a classical music group that specializes in the performance of early music. The group was founded in 2004 by the French musician Alexandre Danilevski, who serves as the ensemble's artistic director and conductor. Since its inception, Ensemble Syntagma has become one of the most respected early music ensembles in Europe, known for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. The birth of Ensemble Syntagma can be traced back to Danilevski's early years as a musician. Born in Paris in 1972, Danilevski began studying music at a young age, and quickly developed a passion for early music. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he specialized in the performance of medieval and Renaissance music. After completing his studies, Danilevski began performing with various early music ensembles in France and throughout Europe. In 2004, Danilevski decided to form his own ensemble, with the goal of exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of early music. He assembled a group of talented musicians from France, Italy, and Spain, and named the ensemble Syntagma, after the Greek word for "collection" or "compilation." The group's mission was to bring together the best of early music from different cultures and periods, and to present it in a fresh and exciting way. From the beginning, Ensemble Syntagma was known for its innovative programming, which combined well-known works from the medieval and Renaissance periods with lesser-known pieces from around the world. The group's performances were characterized by their virtuosic playing, their attention to historical accuracy, and their ability to bring the music to life for modern audiences. One of the highlights of Ensemble Syntagma's early years was their performance at the Festival de Musique Ancienne de Callas in 2006. The festival, which takes place in the picturesque village of Callas in the south of France, is one of the most prestigious early music festivals in Europe. Ensemble Syntagma's performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and musicality, and helped to establish the group as a major force in the early music world. Over the years, Ensemble Syntagma has continued to perform at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe and beyond. They have collaborated with some of the most respected early music artists of our time, including Jordi Savall, Hesperion XXI, and La Capella Reial de Catalunya. They have also recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including "Music from the Time of Cervantes," which won the prestigious Diapason d'Or award in 2010. One of the hallmarks of Ensemble Syntagma's performances is their attention to historical accuracy. The group uses period instruments and plays the music in the style of the time, with a focus on the nuances of rhythm, phrasing, and ornamentation. This approach has earned them a reputation as one of the most authentic and historically informed early music ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Syntagma is also committed to education and outreach. They regularly give masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and have developed educational programs for schools and community groups. Their goal is to share their love of early music with as many people as possible, and to inspire the next generation of musicians to explore this rich and fascinating repertoire.
