Erika Raum is a renowned Canadian violinist who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1966, she began playing the violin at the age of four. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue her passion for music from a young age. Raum's talent was evident from the beginning, and she quickly became a prodigy. She studied with some of the best violin teachers in Canada, including Gwen Thompson and Lorand Fenyves. She also attended the Banff Centre for the Arts, where she studied with the legendary violinist Isaac Stern. In 1984, Raum won the prestigious Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, which launched her career as a professional musician. She went on to win numerous other awards and accolades, including the Canada Council for the Arts' Career Development Grant and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award. Raum has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, Asia, and South America. One of the highlights of Raum's career was her performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1999. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Raum was praised for her virtuosity and emotional depth. In addition to her work as a soloist, Raum is also a dedicated chamber musician. She has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Gryphon Trio. She is also a founding member of the Trio Accord, which has been praised for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. Raum is also a respected teacher and mentor. She has taught at the University of Toronto, the Glenn Gould School, and the University of British Columbia. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians. Throughout her career, Raum has been committed to promoting Canadian music and supporting young Canadian musicians. She has commissioned and premiered numerous works by Canadian composers, and she has served as a judge for many Canadian music competitions. In recognition of her contributions to Canadian music, Raum was awarded the Order of Canada in 2012. The award is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Canadian citizen, and it recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Canadian society. Today, Erika Raum continues to perform, teach, and inspire audiences around the world.
