In 2005, he made his debut at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland, where he was awarded the third prize. Kim's success at the Chopin Competition opened up new opportunities for him, and he was soon invited to perform at other major music festivals, including the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas, and the International Piano Festival in La Roque d'Antheron, France.
