Linn Subotnick is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the field of electronic music. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1931, Subotnick grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her father was a composer and her mother was a painter, and they encouraged her to pursue her passion for music from a young age. Subotnick began her musical training on the piano, but soon became interested in electronic music. In the 1950s, she studied with the composer and electronic music pioneer, Morton Subotnick, whom she later married. Together, they founded the San Francisco Tape Music Center, which became a hub for experimental music in the 1960s. Subotnick's early works were created using tape recorders and other electronic equipment, and were often performed in collaboration with dancers and visual artists. Her most famous work from this period is "Silver Apples of the Moon," which was released in 1967 and is considered a landmark in the history of electronic music. In the 1970s, Subotnick began to incorporate live performance into her work, using synthesizers and other electronic instruments. She also began to collaborate with other musicians, including the Kronos Quartet and the composer Pauline Oliveros. Throughout her career, Subotnick has been recognized for her contributions to the field of electronic music. In 2018, she was awarded the prestigious Golden Nica award at the Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria.
