The University of Houston Moores School Symphony Orchestra (MSSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Houston, Texas. The orchestra was founded in 1946 by Dr. Leopold Stokowski, a renowned conductor and musician, who served as the orchestra's first music director. Since then, the MSSO has become one of the most respected and accomplished orchestras in the United States. The MSSO is composed of approximately 90 undergraduate and graduate students from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. The orchestra is led by its current music director, Franz Anton Krager, who has been with the orchestra since 1980. Krager is a highly respected conductor and has led the MSSO to numerous awards and accolades over the years. One of the highlights of the MSSO's history was its performance at the 1986 International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Aberdeen, Scotland. The orchestra was one of only six orchestras from around the world to be invited to perform at the festival, and its performance was met with critical acclaim. The MSSO has also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition to its performances, the MSSO has also received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the American Prize in Orchestral Performance, which recognizes excellence in the field of orchestral music. The MSSO has also been a finalist for the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance. The MSSO's repertoire is diverse and includes works from a wide range of composers and musical periods. The orchestra has performed works by Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler, as well as contemporary composers such as John Adams and Jennifer Higdon. The MSSO also regularly collaborates with guest artists and conductors, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Leonard Slatkin. The MSSO is committed to education and outreach, and regularly performs for school groups and community organizations. The orchestra also offers a variety of educational programs, including masterclasses and workshops, to help young musicians develop their skills and knowledge.
