The orchestra was founded in 1946 by Dr. Leopold Stokowski, a renowned conductor and musician, who served as the orchestra's first music director. Since then, the MSSO has become one of the most respected and accomplished orchestras in the United States. The MSSO is composed of approximately 90 undergraduate and graduate students from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. The orchestra is led by its current music director, Franz Anton Krager, who has been with the orchestra since 1980. Krager is a highly respected conductor and has led the MSSO to numerous awards and accolades over the years. One of the highlights of the MSSO's history was its performance at the 1986 International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Aberdeen, Scotland. The orchestra was one of only six orchestras from around the world to be invited to perform at the festival, and its performance was met with critical acclaim. The MSSO has also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
