He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Josef showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. At the age of six, Josef began taking formal piano lessons with his mother. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began performing in public at the age of eight. By the time he was a teenager, Josef had already won several local and regional piano competitions. In 1973, Josef was accepted into the Vienna Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Paul Badura-Skoda. During his time at the conservatory, Josef honed his skills as a pianist and developed a deep appreciation for the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. After graduating from the conservatory in 1977, Josef began performing professionally as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation and was invited to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Throughout his career, Josef was known for his technical brilliance and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, which he performed with a rare combination of precision and passion. In addition to his solo performances, Josef was also a sought-after chamber musician. He frequently collaborated with other musicians, including violinists, cellists, and other pianists, to create some of the most memorable chamber music performances of his time. Over the course of his career, Josef received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1985, he was awarded the prestigious Mozart Medal by the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria. In 1992, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, and in 2001, he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. Despite his many accomplishments, Josef remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death on June 15, 2018, at the age of 63.
