He was born on September 13, 1939, in Gary, Indiana, USA. Willoughby grew up in a family that valued music, and he began playing the flute at a young age. His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Willoughby attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied under the tutelage of Joseph Mariano. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1961 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1962. During his time at Eastman, Willoughby was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. After completing his studies, Willoughby joined the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C. He served as the principal flutist for the band from 1962 to 1965. During his time in the army, Willoughby performed for President Lyndon B. Johnson and other high-ranking officials. In 1965, Willoughby joined the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. He taught there for over 30 years and served as the chair of the wind and percussion department from 1980 to 1990. Willoughby was a beloved teacher and mentor to many students during his tenure at the university. Throughout his career, Willoughby has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles. He has been a soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Pops Orchestra, among others. Willoughby has also performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Marlboro Music Festival. One of Willoughby's most notable performances was his solo recital at Carnegie Hall in 1971. The New York Times praised his "virtuosity and musicianship" and noted that he "played with a rich, full tone and a sense of style that was both elegant and expressive." Willoughby has also been recognized for his recordings. He has recorded for the RCA, Columbia, and Crystal labels, among others. In 1973, he won a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for his recording of the Bach Brandenburg Concertos with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players. In addition to his performing and recording career, Willoughby has also been an active member of the music community. He has served on the board of directors for the National Flute Association and has been a guest lecturer and clinician at universities and music festivals around the world. Willoughby has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1998, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Flute Association. He has also been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Michigan Music Teachers Association. Willoughby retired from the University of Michigan in 1998 but has continued to perform and teach. He has been a visiting professor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has taught at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Willoughby has also been a faculty member at the Sarasota Music Festival and the Brevard Music Center.
