Alexander Maly was born on May 15, 1985, in Moscow, Russia. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Maly was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Maly's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He won his first competition at the age of eight and went on to win numerous awards throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 1997, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Paris, France, which launched his international career. Maly continued his musical education at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Sergei Dorensky. In addition to his performing and recording career, Maly is also a dedicated teacher.
