He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both music enthusiasts. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged Piet to pursue music from a young age. Piet showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of five. He quickly progressed and started performing in public at the age of eight. He also started learning the violin and the cello, and by the age of twelve, he was proficient in all three instruments. In 1962, Piet was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London. He was only twelve years old at the time, and he was the youngest student ever to be accepted into the college. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in the world, including Yehudi Menuhin and Jacqueline du Pré. Piet's talent and dedication to music were evident from a young age, and he quickly made a name for himself in the classical music world. He won numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1970. He was the first South African musician to win this competition, and it cemented his reputation as one of the world's leading classical music artists. Throughout his career, Piet performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of Piet's most memorable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1975. The performance was hailed as a masterpiece, and it earned Piet critical acclaim and numerous awards. Piet was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded over 50 albums throughout his career. His recordings of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven are considered some of the best in the classical music world.
