Iktus Percussion is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in New York City. The group was founded in 2006 by percussionists Chris Graham, Steve Sehman, and Nick Woodbury. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating cast of musicians, including percussionists, composers, and guest performers. The founding members of Iktus Percussion met while studying at the Manhattan School of Music. They shared a passion for contemporary classical music and a desire to create a new kind of percussion ensemble that would push the boundaries of the genre. They named the group Iktus, which is Greek for "fish," as a nod to the idea of swimming against the current and exploring new territory. From the beginning, Iktus Percussion has been committed to commissioning and performing new works by emerging and established composers. The ensemble has premiered over 200 new works, many of which were written specifically for them. They have collaborated with a wide range of composers, including John Luther Adams, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. One of the highlights of Iktus Percussion's career was their performance at the Bang on a Can Marathon in 2010. The Bang on a Can Marathon is an annual music festival in New York City that showcases contemporary classical music. Iktus Percussion was invited to perform a set of new works by emerging composers, which was well-received by the audience and critics alike. In 2012, Iktus Percussion released their debut album, "Iktus Percussion," which featured works by David Lang, John Cage, and others. The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish the ensemble as a leading force in contemporary classical music. In addition to their performances and recordings, Iktus Percussion is also committed to education and outreach. They have conducted workshops and masterclasses at universities and music schools across the United States, and have worked with young musicians to develop their skills and understanding of contemporary classical music. Over the years, Iktus Percussion has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2014, they were awarded a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music to support the commissioning of new works. They were also named a finalist for the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2015. In 2018, Iktus Percussion celebrated their 10th anniversary with a series of concerts and events in New York City. The ensemble continues to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music and to inspire audiences and musicians alike with their innovative and adventurous approach to percussion music.
