Born on May 12, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she was the youngest of six children. Her parents were both musicians, and her father was a choir director at their local church. Sister Germaine grew up surrounded by music and began playing the piano at a young age. At the age of 18, Sister Germaine joined the School Sisters of St. Francis, a Catholic religious order. She continued her musical studies while in the convent and eventually earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Alverno College in Milwaukee. She also studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Sister Germaine's talent as a pianist quickly became apparent, and she began performing professionally in the 1950s. She performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, playing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. Her performances were always well-received, and she was praised for her technical skill and emotional depth. One of Sister Germaine's most memorable performances was at Carnegie Hall in 1963. She played a program of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin, and the audience gave her a standing ovation. The New York Times called her performance "a triumph of artistry and devotion." Sister Germaine also received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1965, she was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal by Pope Paul VI for her contributions to the church through her music. She was also awarded the Wisconsin Arts Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. Despite her success as a performer, Sister Germaine remained committed to her religious vocation. She continued to live in the convent and taught music at Alverno College for many years. She also served as the organist and choir director at her local church. Sister Germaine passed away on December 31, 2012, at the age of 88. She left behind a legacy of musical excellence and devotion to her faith.
