Heidenreich showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at a young age. He later went on to study composition with some of the most prominent musicians of his time. Heidenreich's early years were spent in Königsberg, where he received his first musical education. He showed great promise as a pianist and composer, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In 1851, he moved to Berlin to study at the Royal Academy of Music. There, he studied piano with Theodor Kullak and composition with Friedrich Kiel. After completing his studies, Heidenreich began his career as a pianist and composer. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician and was soon performing throughout Germany. He also began to compose music, and his works were well-received by audiences and critics alike. One of Heidenreich's most notable works is his Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor. The concerto was composed in 1860 and premiered the following year in Berlin. The piece is known for its virtuosic piano writing and its dramatic, Romantic style. It remains one of Heidenreich's most popular works and is still performed today. Heidenreich also composed a number of chamber works, including several string quartets and a piano trio. His String Quartet No. 1 in D minor is particularly noteworthy for its use of folk melodies and its innovative harmonic language. The quartet was premiered in 1865 and was well-received by audiences and critics. In addition to his work as a composer, Heidenreich was also a respected pianist. He performed throughout Europe and was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to interpret the works of other composers. He was particularly admired for his performances of the music of Chopin and Liszt. Heidenreich's later years were marked by illness and financial difficulties. He suffered from tuberculosis and was forced to curtail his performing and composing activities. He died in 1893 at the age of 60.
