Hawes grew up in a family that valued music, and he was exposed to various genres of music from an early age. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a classical pianist. Hawes started playing the trombone when he was in the fourth grade, and he quickly fell in love with the instrument. Hawes attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1978. During his time at the University of Michigan, Hawes studied with renowned trombonist Frank Crisafulli, who was a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. After completing his studies, Hawes began his professional career as a trombonist. He joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1978, where he played for 31 years. During his time with the orchestra, Hawes performed in numerous concerts and recordings, and he also served as the principal trombonist for many years. In addition to his work with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Hawes has also performed with other orchestras and ensembles around the world. He has played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and many others. Hawes has also performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, and the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Hawes is also a dedicated educator, and he has taught at various institutions throughout his career. He has served on the faculty of the University of Michigan, the University of Windsor, and the University of Western Ontario. Hawes has also given masterclasses and clinics at universities and music schools around the world. One of the highlights of Hawes' career was his performance of the world premiere of Christopher Rouse's Trombone Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1992. The concerto was written specifically for Hawes, and it has since become a staple of the trombone repertoire. Hawes has also recorded the concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the recording has received critical acclaim. Hawes has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1999, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. In 2005, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Trombone Association. Hawes was also inducted into the Michigan State University College of Music Wall of Fame in 2015. In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Hawes is also a composer and arranger. He has written numerous works for trombone, including solos, duets, and chamber music. Hawes has also arranged music for trombone ensemble, and his arrangements have been performed by ensembles around the world. Hawes retired from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2009, but he continues to perform, teach, and compose. He is currently a professor of trombone at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has been on the faculty since 2010.
