The quintet was founded in 1976 by five talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the possibilities of the wind quintet genre. The founding members of the Borealis Wind Quintet were flutist Tamar Beach Wells, oboist Lorraine Duso Kitts, clarinetist Kathryn Taylor, bassoonist Janet Polk, and horn player William Purvis. Each member brought their own unique style and expertise to the group, creating a dynamic and cohesive sound that quickly gained recognition in the classical music world. The Borealis Wind Quintet's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from traditional works by Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary pieces by living composers. The quintet's ability to seamlessly blend different styles and genres has earned them a reputation as one of the most versatile and innovative wind ensembles in the world. Over the years, the Borealis Wind Quintet has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the United States and abroad. They have been featured at the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival, among others. The quintet has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and South America, earning critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences wherever they go. In addition to their live performances, the Borealis Wind Quintet has recorded several albums, including "Music for Winds and Piano" and "American Music for Wind Quintet." Their recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy nomination for their album "The Complete Music of Carl Nielsen, Vol. 1." The Borealis Wind Quintet has also been recognized for their commitment to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops at universities and conservatories around the world, and have worked with young musicians through programs such as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Young Musicians Program and the New York Youth Symphony. Throughout their long and illustrious career, the Borealis Wind Quintet has received numerous awards and honors. In 1980, they were the first wind quintet to win the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award, which recognizes outstanding young chamber music ensembles. They have also been awarded the Cleveland Quartet Award and the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Borealis Wind Quintet has remained a vital and innovative force in the classical music world. Their commitment to excellence, versatility, and education has earned them a devoted following and a place among the most respected and admired wind ensembles of our time.More....
