GermanyBirth:ca. 1189Death:after 1237Period:MedievalGenre:VocalNeidhart von Reuental was a medieval German poet and composer who lived in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He was born in the town of Reuental, which is now part of Austria, and little is known about his early life. However, it is believed that he was a member of the lower nobility and may have served as a court musician. Neidhart is best known for his poetry and songs, which were written in Middle High German and often dealt with themes of courtly love and chivalry. His works were popular among the aristocracy and were often performed at courtly gatherings and festivals. Neidhart's songs were typically written in a simple, straightforward style and were accompanied by a lute or other stringed instrument. They often featured humorous or satirical lyrics and were known for their catchy melodies and memorable refrains. One of Neidhart's most famous works is the song cycle known as the Neidhartlieder, which consists of over 100 songs. The cycle tells the story of a wandering minstrel named Neidhart who travels from court to court, singing his songs and entertaining the nobility. The songs are notable for their vivid descriptions of courtly life and their depictions of the various characters that Neidhart encounters on his travels. In addition to his poetry and songs, Neidhart also composed instrumental music, including dances and other pieces for the lute. However, very little of this music has survived to the present day. Despite his popularity during his lifetime, Neidhart's works fell out of favor in the centuries that followed and were largely forgotten until the 19th century, when they were rediscovered by scholars and musicians. Today, Neidhart is recognized as one of the most important medieval German poets and composers, and his works continue to be performed and studied by scholars and musicians around the world.More....
