David Binney is a renowned American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader who has made a significant contribution to the world of jazz and contemporary music. Born on August 2, 1961, in Miami, Florida, Binney grew up in Southern California, where he began playing the saxophone at the age of 12. He was inspired by the music of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Rollins, and he quickly developed a passion for jazz. Binney attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he studied with saxophonist Joe Henderson. He later moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with saxophonist George Coleman. In the early 1980s, Binney began performing with various jazz groups in New York City, including the Gil Evans Orchestra, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and the Lost Tribe. In 1991, Binney released his debut album, Point Game, which featured his original compositions and arrangements. He went on to release several more albums as a bandleader, including Free to Dream (1998), South (2000), and Bastion of Sanity (2011). Binney has also collaborated with many other jazz musicians, including pianist Uri Caine, guitarist Ben Monder, and drummer Brian Blade. He has performed at major jazz festivals around the world, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Newport Jazz Festival.
