Born in New York City in 1955, Sternberg grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a very young age. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a classical pianist, so it was only natural that Sternberg would develop a love for music. Sternberg began playing the clarinet at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with some of the best clarinet teachers in the world, including Leon Russianoff and David Weber, and went on to attend the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. After graduating from Juilliard, Sternberg began her professional career as a clarinetist. She quickly gained a reputation as one of the best clarinet players in the world and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Sternberg's career was her performance at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. She was chosen to perform the national anthem at the opening ceremony, and her performance was widely praised for its beauty and precision. Sternberg has also won numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1982, she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which is one of the most prestigious competitions for young classical musicians. She has also won the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Naumburg Clarinet Award, and the Concert Artists Guild Award. In addition to her work as a soloist, Sternberg is also a dedicated chamber musician.
