He was a prodigious talent, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won several competitions and performed in major concert halls across Brazil. Monteiro's early musical education was shaped by his studies with some of Brazil's most prominent pianists, including José Eduardo Martins and Gilberto Tinetti. He also studied with the legendary French pianist Yvonne Loriod, who was a close collaborator of the composer Olivier Messiaen. Under Loriod's guidance, Monteiro developed a deep appreciation for the music of Messiaen and other French composers, which would become a hallmark of his repertoire. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Brazilian composers, including Heitor Villa-Lobos and Camargo Guarnieri. He has also championed the music of lesser-known composers, such as the Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone, whose piano music he has recorded extensively. In addition to his career as a soloist, Monteiro is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including the cellist Antonio Meneses, the violinist Gidon Kremer, and the pianist Martha Argerich. He is a founding member of the São Paulo Trio, which has performed extensively in Brazil and abroad. Monteiro's recordings have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. His recording of the complete piano music of Francisco Mignone won the prestigious Prêmio Carlos Gomes, Brazil's highest award for classical music. He has also recorded the complete piano music of Villa-Lobos, as well as works by Messiaen, Debussy, and Ravel. Monteiro is a passionate advocate for music education and has taught at several institutions in Brazil, including the São Paulo State University and the University of Campinas.
