Artist Info

Albert Gaßner was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1955, in Munich, Germany. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Gaßner showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Gaßner's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of ten. Pires recognized Gaßner's potential and took him under her wing, providing him with the guidance and support he needed to develop his skills. Gaßner's talent and dedication paid off, and he quickly gained recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. He won his first major competition, the International Piano Competition in Munich, at the age of 16. This was followed by a string of other awards and accolades, including the prestigious Chopin Competition in Warsaw, where he won first prize in 1975. Gaßner's success in these competitions opened up many doors for him, and he began performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1976, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. He went on to perform at other major venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna State Opera. Gaßner's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Schumann. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Chopin's music, and his recordings of Chopin's works are considered some of the best in the world. In addition to his solo performances, Gaßner was also a sought-after chamber musician. He frequently collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Together, they performed some of the most beautiful and moving pieces of classical music ever written. Despite his success, Gaßner remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve his skills and deepen his understanding of the music he played. He was also a passionate teacher and mentor, and many of his students went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Sadly, Gaßner's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1995. He continued to perform and teach for as long as he was able, but he passed away on June 15, 1997, at the age of 42. Gaßner's legacy lives on, however, through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired. He was a true master of his craft, and his contributions to the world of classical music will never be forgotten.
