Nancy Weems is a renowned classical pianist and educator who has made significant contributions to the world of music. Born in Houston, Texas, in 1949, Weems showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. She received her first formal training at the Houston Music School, where she studied with Ruth Burrage and later with Albert Hirsh. Weems continued her education at the University of Houston, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. She then went on to study with renowned pianist and pedagogue Rosina Lhévinne at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she earned a Master of Music degree. Weems also studied with Adele Marcus at the Manhattan School of Music, where she earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Throughout her career, Weems has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, both in the United States and abroad. She has appeared with numerous orchestras, including the Houston Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, the New York Chamber Symphony, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Moscow Conservatory. Weems has received numerous awards and honors for her performances and recordings. She was a winner of the Artists International Competition in New York City, the Houston Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, and the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition. She has also been a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship, the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant, and the Texas Music Teachers Association Distinguished Service Award. In addition to her performing career, Weems is also a highly respected educator. She has served on the faculty of the University of Houston Moores School of Music since 1976, where she is currently a Professor of Piano and the Director of Keyboard Collaborative Arts. She has also taught at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York City. Weems is known for her passionate and insightful interpretations of classical repertoire, particularly the works of Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. She has also been a champion of contemporary music, having premiered works by composers such as John Corigliano, Joan Tower, and Lowell Liebermann. Throughout her career, Weems has remained committed to promoting the arts and music education. She has served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Houston Symphony Society, the Texas Music Teachers Association, and the American Liszt Society. She has also been a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass clinician at universities and music schools throughout the United States and abroad. In recognition of her contributions to the world of music, Weems has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and has been inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame. She continues to inspire and educate young musicians through her teaching and performances, and her legacy as a pianist and educator will undoubtedly continue to influence the world of classical music for generations to come.
