The orchestra was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, and was originally known as the Wroclaw Philharmonic. It was renamed in honor of the Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski in 1995, following his death. The ensemble has had a number of notable conductors over the years, including Kazimierz Kord, Tadeusz Strugala, and Jacek Kaspszyk. The current artistic director and principal conductor is Giancarlo Guerrero, who has been with the orchestra since 2017. The Witold Lutoslawski Philharmonic has a wide-ranging repertoire, performing works from the classical, romantic, and modern eras. The ensemble has also commissioned and premiered a number of new works by contemporary composers. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the 1956 International Festival of Contemporary Music in Venice, where it played works by Polish composers such as Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Andrzej Panufnik. The ensemble's performance was widely praised and helped to establish the reputation of Polish contemporary music on the international stage. In 1973, the Witold Lutoslawski Philharmonic moved into its current home, the National Forum of Music in Wroclaw. The building was designed specifically for the orchestra and features state-of-the-art acoustics. Over the years, the ensemble has won numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious International Classical Music Award for its recording of Lutoslawski's Symphony No. 1 and Concerto for Orchestra. In addition to its regular concert series in Wroclaw, the Witold Lutoslawski Philharmonic has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Witold Lutoslawski Philharmonic has also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists and conductors over the years, including Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, and Valery Gergiev. Overall, the Witold Lutoslawski Philharmonic has established itself as one of Poland's leading classical music ensembles, with a rich history of performances, recordings, and collaborations. The orchestra's commitment to promoting Polish contemporary music has helped to shape the country's cultural identity and influence the wider world of classical music.More....
