Leslie Thimmig is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born in 1965 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Thimmig grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a classical pianist. Thimmig started playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly developed a passion for music. Thimmig attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. She then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree in flute performance at the University of Michigan. During her time at the University of Michigan, Thimmig studied with renowned flutist Leone Buyse and won the school's concerto competition. After completing her studies, Thimmig began her professional career as a flutist. She has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra. Thimmig has also performed as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work as a performer, Thimmig is also an accomplished educator. She has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Thimmig is currently a professor of flute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she has been on the faculty since 1991. Throughout her career, Thimmig has received numerous awards and accolades for her work as a flutist and educator. In 1990, she was a finalist in the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition. In 1991, she won the Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship for Music Composition. In 1996, she was awarded the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award. One of the highlights of Thimmig's career was her performance of the world premiere of John Harbison's "Flute Concerto" with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 1999. The piece was written specifically for Thimmig, and she received critical acclaim for her performance. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called her performance "brilliant" and "virtuosic." Thimmig has also been involved in numerous recordings throughout her career. In 1995, she released a CD titled "Leslie Thimmig: Flute Music of the Americas," which featured works by American composers. In 2001, she released a CD titled "Leslie Thimmig: Flute Music of the 20th Century," which featured works by composers such as Elliott Carter, George Crumb, and Toru Takemitsu. In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Thimmig is also an active composer. She has written numerous works for flute, including "Three Pieces for Flute and Piano," "Sonata for Flute and Piano," and "Flute Concerto." Her compositions have been performed by numerous ensembles and have been featured on several recordings. Thimmig's contributions to the world of music have been significant, and she continues to be an active performer, educator, and composer. Her passion for music and dedication to her craft have made her a respected figure in the classical music community.
