Laszlo Jambor was a Hungarian classical pianist and music educator who was born on August 19, 1924, in Budapest, Hungary. He was the son of a music teacher and began playing the piano at a young age. Jambor's talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest at the age of 14. Jambor's studies at the academy were interrupted by World War II, during which he was conscripted into the Hungarian army. After the war, he resumed his studies and graduated from the academy in 1948. He then went on to study with renowned pianist and teacher Marguerite Long in Paris. Jambor's career as a concert pianist began in the 1950s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer. He made his debut in the United States in 1956, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He also performed with other major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Jambor was known for his interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, and he recorded several of Liszt's pieces for the Deutsche Grammophon label. He also recorded works by other composers, including Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy. In addition to his career as a performer, Jambor was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also gave masterclasses around the world, including in Japan, Australia, and South Africa. Jambor received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1962, he was awarded the Liszt Prize by the Hungarian government. He was also awarded the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest cultural honor, in 1973. In 1984, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic. Jambor continued to perform and teach until his death on January 14, 1997, in Los Angeles, California. He was 72 years old. His legacy as a performer and educator continues to inspire musicians around the world.
