Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli was an Italian composer and conductor who lived from 4 April 1752 to 5 May 1837. He was born in Naples, Italy, and was the son of a musician. His father, Gaetano Zingarelli, was a violinist and composer who worked at the Royal Chapel in Naples. Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli grew up in a musical family and showed an early interest in music. He received his first music lessons from his father and later studied with other prominent musicians in Naples. Zingarelli's musical career began when he was appointed as the organist at the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Naples at the age of 16. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician and composer, and in 1772, he was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the Royal Chapel in Naples. This was a prestigious position, and it allowed Zingarelli to work with some of the most talented musicians and composers of his time. During his time at the Royal Chapel, Zingarelli composed a number of operas, oratorios, and sacred music. His most famous work is the opera Giulietta e Romeo, which was first performed in Naples in 1796. The opera is based on the story of Romeo and Juliet and is known for its beautiful melodies and dramatic arias. It was a huge success and was performed in many cities throughout Italy and Europe. Zingarelli's other operas include Montezuma, which was first performed in Naples in 1781, and Ifigenia in Aulide, which was first performed in Venice in 1797. Both operas were well-received and helped to establish Zingarelli as one of the leading composers of his time. In addition to his operas, Zingarelli also composed a number of oratorios and sacred music. His oratorio La Betulia Liberata, which was first performed in Naples in 1781, is considered to be one of his most important works. The oratorio tells the story of the liberation of the city of Bethulia from the Assyrian army and is known for its beautiful choral writing and dramatic arias. Zingarelli's sacred music includes a number of masses, motets, and hymns. His Missa Solenne in G minor, which was first performed in Naples in 1815, is considered to be one of his most important works in this genre.
