She was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in a working-class family. Despite her humble beginnings, Cynthia had a natural talent for singing and began performing at a young age. Cynthia's musical education began at the age of 11 when she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music. She continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was awarded the prestigious Queen's Prize for singing in 1958. Cynthia's professional career began in 1959 when she joined the chorus of the Royal Opera House in London. She quickly rose through the ranks and made her debut as a soloist in 1961, singing the role of the First Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute". Her performance was well-received, and she soon became a regular performer at the Royal Opera House. In 1963, Cynthia made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where she sang the role of Pamina in "The Magic Flute". Her performance was a huge success, and she was praised for her beautiful voice and natural acting ability. She continued to perform at Glyndebourne for many years, singing a variety of roles in operas such as "The Marriage of Figaro", "Don Giovanni", and "Cosi fan tutte". Cynthia's career continued to flourish throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and she became one of the most sought-after sopranos in the world. She performed at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. She also appeared in many concerts and recitals, performing a wide range of classical music. One of Cynthia's most memorable performances was in 1971 when she sang the role of Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme" at the Royal Opera House. Her performance was widely praised, and she was awarded the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She went on to perform the role of Mimi many times throughout her career, and it became one of her signature roles. Cynthia's talent was not limited to opera, and she also had a successful career as a concert singer. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She also recorded many albums of classical music, including a highly acclaimed recording of Handel's "Messiah" with the London Symphony Orchestra. Throughout her career, Cynthia received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1979, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, and in 1991, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She was also awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Manchester and the University of Warwick. Cynthia retired from performing in 1996, but her legacy as one of the greatest sopranos of her generation lives on.
