Sooyun Kim is a world-renowned classical flutist who has captivated audiences with her virtuosic performances and expressive interpretations of classical repertoire. Born in South Korea, Kim began playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Seoul National University of Arts and the Juilliard School in New York City, where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in flute performance. Kim's career as a professional flutist began in earnest when she won the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2003. This award launched her onto the international stage, and she has since performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic. She has also been a featured performer at major music festivals such as the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. One of the highlights of Kim's career came in 2012, when she was invited to perform at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. She played a program of classical works by composers such as Bach, Debussy, and Poulenc, and her performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Kim has also been recognized for her achievements as a musician with numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, she has won prizes at the Kobe International Flute Competition, the Carl Nielsen International Flute Competition, and the Prague Spring International Music Competition. She has also been a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. Despite her many accomplishments, Kim remains dedicated to her craft and continues to push herself to new heights as a performer and musician. She is known for her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to bring out the nuances and subtleties of the music she plays. Her performances are marked by a sense of passion and intensity that have earned her a devoted following among classical music fans around the world. In addition to her work as a soloist, Kim is also an active chamber musician and collaborator. She has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Orion String Quartet, and the Brentano String Quartet. She is also a member of the Chamber Music Society of Korea, which is dedicated to promoting classical music in her home country. Kim's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been praised for their technical excellence and musical sensitivity. Her debut album, "French Recital," features works by French composers such as Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc, and showcases her ability to bring out the unique qualities of each piece. Her second album, "Serenade," features works by Mozart, Schubert, and Dutilleux, and highlights her ability to convey the emotional depth and complexity of classical music.
