The Winterhurer Streichquartett is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1999 in Winterthur, Switzerland, by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The founding members of the Winterhurer Streichquartett were violinists Sebastian Bohren and Tobias Fandel, violist Matthias Well, and cellist Boris Previsic. All four musicians had already established themselves as accomplished soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. From the very beginning, the Winterhurer Streichquartett set out to explore the vast repertoire of string quartet music, from the classical works of Haydn and Mozart to the modern compositions of Bartok and Shostakovich. Their dedication to their craft and their commitment to excellence quickly earned them a reputation as one of the finest string quartets in Switzerland. Over the years, the Winterhurer Streichquartett has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in Europe and beyond. They have been invited to perform at the Lucerne Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Rheingau Musik Festival, and the Festival Internacional de Música de Cámara de Aguascalientes in Mexico, among others. One of the highlights of the Winterhurer Streichquartett's career was their performance at the 2004 International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka, Japan. The quartet was awarded first prize, as well as the special prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work. This was a significant achievement for the quartet, as the competition is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious chamber music competitions in the world. In addition to their success at competitions, the Winterhurer Streichquartett has also received critical acclaim for their recordings. Their debut album, featuring works by Haydn and Schubert, was released in 2003 and received rave reviews from critics. Subsequent recordings, including a collection of works by Beethoven and a collaboration with pianist Oliver Schnyder, have also been well-received. The Winterhurer Streichquartett has undergone some changes in its lineup over the years, with violist Matthias Well leaving the group in 2010 and being replaced by violist David Schneebeli. However, the quartet's commitment to excellence and their passion for chamber music has remained unchanged. Today, the Winterhurer Streichquartett continues to perform regularly, delighting audiences with their impeccable musicianship and their deep understanding of the string quartet repertoire. Their dedication to their craft and their commitment to excellence have made them one of the most respected and admired chamber music ensembles in the world.
